  4. Name

    1. The name of the association shall be the Augusta Baptist Association of Virginia. (ABAV)

  5. Mission

    1. The mission of the ABAV shall be to provide member churches with networking resources which propagate the gospel of Jesus Christ through fellowship and avenues of service and ministry.

  6. Membership

    1. Any church desiring membership in the ABAV may submit their request in writing to the Leadership Team (LT). The LT shall make a suitable recommendation to the Association for consideration at the fall meeting. A two-thirds majority of those members present and voting shall be required for admittance to membership.

    2. Withdrawal and Dismissal

      1. A church may withdraw from membership at any time through written notice to the Leadership Team.

      2. The ABAV may dismiss a church from membership following written request by a member church to the Leadership Team. The LT shall make a recommendation to the association for consideration at the Annual Meeting. A two-thirds majority of those members present and voting shall be required for dismissal.



  1. Representation

    1. Each member church may elect up to five voting messengers to represent the church in business sessions. Officers of the ABAV shall be ex-officio voting members without reducing the quota of any church.

    2. Any member of any member church is welcome to attend all open meetings of the association.

  2. Leadership Team

    1. The Leadership Team shall implement the mission of the ABAV consistent with decisions made during the Annual Meeting.

    2. The Leadership Team annually shall submit to the ABAV for its consideration a set of objectives for the coming year.

    3. The Leadership Team annually shall submit to the ABAV a proposed budget for consideration by the association that will enable the association to achieve its objectives.

    4. The Leadership Team shall consist of:

      1. Officers of the ABAV

        1. Moderator -- The Moderator shall preside at all regular and called business meetings of the ABAV. The Moderator shall not serve more than two terms in succession.

        2. Vice-Moderator -- The Vice Moderator shall fulfill the duties Moderator in his/her absence. The Vice Moderator shall not serve more than two terms in succession.

        3. Clerk -- The Clerk shall keep an accurate record of all proceedings of the Association and the Leadership Team and shall make such information available to churches upon request. The Clerk shall not serve for more than five terms in succession.

        4. Treasurer -- The Treasurer shall receive, hold, deposit, and disburse all funds according to the current budget of the Association. The Treasurer shall make periodic reports to the Leadership Team and an annual report to the Association at the Annual Meeting. The Treasurer shall furnish a fidelity bond, the premium of which shall be paid by the Association. The LT shall annually solicit the services of a member church to conduct an audit of the books. The Treasurer shall not serve for more than five terms in succession.

        5. Assistant Treasurer -- The Assistant Treasurer shall serve with the Treasurer to assist in the discharge of the Treasurer’s duties. The Assistant Treasurer shall fulfill the duties of the Treasurer in his/her absence. The Assistant Treasurer shall furnish a fidelity bond, the premium of which shall be paid by the Association. The Assistant Treasurer shall not serve more than five terms in succession.

        6. Associational Director of Missions -- A Director of Missions (DOM) will be called by the Association and will assume overall leadership of the mission performance, administrative, and church advisory work of the Association. The DOM shall work in accordance with a position description approved by the Association and shall chair the Leadership Team. In the absence of the DOM, the Leadership Team will be chaired by the Moderator of the ABAV. When a vacancy occurs in this position, the Leadership Team will appoint a Search Committee which shall bring a recommendation as to a replacement to the ABAV.

      2. At-large members – There shall be at least three and up to five at-large members.

      3. Officers of the ABAV shall serve a term of one year.

    5. The Leadership Team shall have authority to establish ad hoc committees as necessary to accomplish the goals of the Association.

    6. The Leadership Team annually shall solicit recommendations from the churches of the Association for members of the Leadership Team and such recommendations shall be made to the Leadership Team in writing 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting. The LT shall prepare a slate of recommendations to be submitted to the Association at the annual meeting.

  3. Amendments

    1. This constitution may be altered or amended by a two-thirds majority vote of the messengers present at any duly called meeting following ninety (90) days’ notice to the churches in writing of the proposed amendment.
